Structural Waterproofing is commonly referred to as “tanking” and can take various forms.
This type of treatment is required where external ground levels are higher than internal floor levels, where walls are totally earth retaining, e.g. within basements and cellars, subterranean vaulted areas maybe completely enclosed by earth, or where adjacent structures or properties are constructed at different levels. The theory of Structural Waterpoofing is to provide a water-proof, impervious, dry decorative surface internally, retaining moisture or dampness or indeed free running water.
The solution will mainly depend on the intended use of the basement or area being water proofed. Other considerations are the condition of the surface being water proofed and method of construction.
BS 8102, Code of Practice for protection of structures against water from the ground, identifies four categories in table one of this document:
Grade 1 – car parking, plant rooms, workshops
Grade 2 & 3 – Domestic and office use
Grade 4 – Archives and stores
Subject to requirements our solutions will include:
Cementitious renders and slurries
Cavity membranes
Resin injection (localised repair)
